CHANGUINOLA |
| |
The
road to the border runs 29km west from Almirante through seemingly
endless banana plantations to CHANGUINOLA , a typically hot and
uninteresting banana town where almost everyone works for the Chiriquí
Land Company ("The Company" - successor to United Fruit) which owns most
of the surrounding land. Buses from Almirante and the border at Guabito
arrive and leave from the terminal, which is usually busy with workers
heading to the banana fincas, known by numbers rather than names.
There's no reason to stop unless you get stuck between Costa Rica and
Bocas, but if you do end up staying here, everything you might need can
be found along the main road that runs alongside the terminal, including,
the a/c Hotel Carol (tel 758 8731; US$10-15), a Banco del Istmo and
several restaurants - the one in the bus station is good and inexpensive,
while the Chiquita Banana , opposite, is more upmarket. |
