CHITRE |
| |
The
capital of Herrera province and the largest town on the peninsula,
CHITRÉ is a quiet market centre where life is conducted at a leisurely
pace. Other than its small museum there's not much to see, but it's a
good base for exploring the rest of the peninsula and its main transport
hub. Chitré centres on the Parque Union, with the usual bandstand,
benches and trees, flanked on one side by the cathedral , built at the
turn of the century, with an impressive vaulted wooden roof. The
cathedral faces down Av Herrera, the town's main street - walk down a
block and turn left on C Manuel Correa to reach the Museo de Herrera (Tues-Sat
8am-noon & 1-4pm, Sun 8-11am; US$1), three blocks away. Set in an
elegant colonial mansion, the museum has a collection of pre-Columbian
pottery from the surrounding area and a good display on local folklore
and customs, featuring traditional masks, costumes and musical
instruments. |
