EL VALLE |

Just
beyond San Carlos, 96km west of Panamá City, a side road climbs up into
the cordillera to EL VALLE , a small village set in an idyllic fertile
valley that was once the crater of a volcano, now long extinct. At 600m
above sea-level, El Valle is comparatively cool, and the surrounding
countryside is good for walking or horse-riding. The area is renowned
for its flowers and orchids , and is a popular retreat for residents of
Panamá City at the weekend, when it gets very busy. Otherwise it's a
peaceful place, where most people get around by bicycle or on horseback
and the only noise is of lawnmowers and of hummingbirds buzzing among
the flowers.
The village and around
Everything in El Valle is spread out along Avenida Principal, the main
street. Next to the church, a small museum (Sun 10am-2pm; US$0.25), run
by nuns, has some good exhibits on local history and folklore, while the
